The Nanaimo and District Fish and Game
Protective Association have been in operation since 1905,
although there was notable interest to form such a club since
1892. Our four founding fathers were: Dave Roger-whom was our 1st
President, Jack Cottle, Tom Banks Booth, and Oscar Mottishaw.
Our current president is George Denton. We currently have over
1200 members. The club itself is well known for their annual
wild game banquet and salmon bbq’s.
The Club has spearheaded many major
conservation projects such as: The early preservation of the
cabins on Shack Island and Horne Lake, some club members put
pressure on the government to ensure Hansen’s Lagoon by Cape
Scott became a Provincial Park, We opened and upgraded over 100
beach accesses, We also fought the Ferrochromuim Plant from
opening at Duke Point, the preservation of Green Mountain which
is home to our famous marmot colony, We also assisted in forming
Morrell Wildlife Sanctuary, as well as many other on going
projects and enhancements to streams and rivers.
The Club sits on 19 ½ acres of purchased
land with a main clubhouse with full cooking facilities which we
use for banquets, receptions, and meetings. The fish and game is
a venue for many shooting disciplines such as: Archery, Black
Powder, I.P.S.C., P.P.C, Skeet, Trap and 22 Rifle Silhouette.
The Trap Club has 4 traps to shoot
from. There is plenty of parking and overnight camping with
limited plug-ins for campers and motor homes. We hold our
practices every Wednesday and Sunday 11am to 3pm. We also host 4
main shoots per year as well as a 2 day turkey shoot and a 1 day
prize shoot in December.
